Distinguishing features

Annual plants with with long (15)20-35(45) inflorescences that break up at maturity, the spikelets falling with the internode below attached (wedge-type disarticulation). Spikelets with 5-9 florets of which the lower 2-3 are fertile. The glumes are widest distally and have diverging veins and truncate, toothed  apices and the lemmas have rounded to acute apices.  

Description

Plants annual. Culms to 100 cm tall.

Leaf sheaths ciliate on the magins; auricles well developed; blades ciliate; sheaths of innovations connate.

Inflorescences  (15)20-35(45) cm long, with 7-19 nodes; spikelets solitary at the nodes; internodes about 10 mm long; disarticulation in the rachis, the spikelets falling with the internode below attached (wedge-type disarticulation).

Spikelets with 5-6(9) florets, the uppermost rudimentary. Glumes equal, 5-10 mm long, widening distally, coriaceous, not keeled, with 5-7 distinct, slightly divergent veins, tips truncate with two conspicuous lateral teeth and usually a short central tooth, unawned. Lemmas as long as the glumes, with 3-5 veins, blunt, slightly keeled distally. Anthers about 4 mm long.

Caryopsis adherent to the lemma and palea.

Size

One species, Amblyopyrum muticum

Distribution

Western Asia, in the Central Anatolian Plateau of Turkey and Armenia. Reports from northeaster Syria need confirmation.

Alternative interpretations

Amblyopyrum has sometimes been include in Aegilops, sometimes in Triticum, with or without Aegilops.
