Intermountain Herbarium

Mission

  • To serve as a primary source of information on the flora and fungi of the Intermountain region, both native and introduced
  • To foster increased understanding and appreciation of the floristic diversity of the Intermountain Region

IN MEMORIAM

RICHARD J. SHAW

1923-2008

Professor Emeritus and Emeritus Director of the Intermountain Herbarium at Utah State University, he specialized in plant systematics and alpine ecosystems while teaching biology and botany. He worked for over 30 years as a naturalist at Grand Teton National Park. He authored seven books on the wildflowers and plants of Utah, Wyoming and Montana.

Dr. Shaw yearly led spring hikes in the foothills above Logan sharing his wealth of knowledge and love of plants with anyone willing to show up for his walks. A great friend and supporter of the herbarium, his passing has left a large void in the collective knowledge of the local plants. His humor, knowledge and spirit will be missed for many years to come.
