Grass Manual: Synonymy
Synonymy for the Manual of North American Grasses
North of Mexico and Flora North America, vols.
24 & 25
The nomenclatural treatment that was developed in connection
with the Manual of North American Grasses is
so extensive that it will be published later as a separate
volume and included in the Manual (=
FNA vol. 24) on a compact disk. The abbreviations used
for authors' names are those recommended by Brummitt
and Powell. Journal abbreviations are from Botanico
Periodicum Huntianum/ Supplementum.
Book abbreviations are from the many volumes of Taxonomic
Literature, ed. 2, all of which are part of the Regnum
Vegetabile series.
Herbarium codes are taken from Index
Herbariorum, another
publication in the Regnum Vegetabile series.
Much of the nomenclatural information has been compiled
from secondary sources. Contributors were asked to notify
us if they had, themselves, examined the holotype, lectotype,
or neotype of a name. If they have done so, an exclamation
point (!) occurs after the information about where the
specimen is located.
The location of holotypes, lectotypes, neotypes, and
epitypes is given when we were able to obtain it. We
have not recorded the location of isotypes, partly because
there are so many for some names and we did not wish
to decide which ones to cite, and partly because, in
the event of a dispute over the meaning of a name, they
cannot provide a definitive answer.
One day we shall post pages providing an explanation
of the terms that are used in the nomenclatural treatments.
For access to posted synonymy files, see the Web Manual.
For a list of all the scientific
names of the subfamilies, tribes, and taxa that are described in volume
25 of the Flora of North America series,
plus those that will be treated in volume 24, click here.
Some of these species are known only in cultivation. The listing also
shows some synonyms of the taxa mentioned in these volumes, but only those
names included in current floras, herbarium databases, and miscellaneous
other publications which were used in creating the maps for volumes 24
and 25. Accepted names are in boldface.
