Stipa is still, in my opinion, a polyphyletic genus whose members share morphological characteristics strongly selected for by growth in seasonally arid environments. These include an elongate floret with a well-developed callus and hygroscopic awn.

The listing of synonyms for the various taxa is based on various sources, sometimes modified by my opinions. The sources consulted for Stipa can be determined by the listing below. Because the genus is large, I have also shown the infrageneric membership if I am aware of it. The listing is alphabetical by species.

If the species you are looking for is not included in the listing below, check one of the many segregate genera.
