Fungal Identification Keys for Utah

There are several good field guides for mushrooms available, but none are designed for use in Utah. As the knowledge of the species found in the area increases, as well as the number of people seeking information on native fungi, there is an increasing demand for a set identification tools that concentrates on those species found in the region.

Michael Piep has been developing identification keys for class use at Utah State University and at workshops sponsored by the Intermountain Herbarium and the Cache Chapter of the Utah Native Plant Society. These are designed for the amateur mycologist and at present provide keys for most of the known fungal families in Utah with macrofungi elements. A small number of family keys to genera and species are also now made available here as PDF documents.

The Following keys are currently available for use in PDF format. Others will be added as time and circumstances permit. If you have any questions or comments please contact Michael Piep at the herbarium.
