Resources: Checklists: Fungal

The current checklist came about due to a need to know which species to include in the identification keys currently used in University classes. Species are added based on a number of criteria:

Listed in order of importance and reliability

  • Specimens from Utah or Nevada in recognized herbaria that had Internet accessible, searchable databases (currently MICH, UBC, NY, TENN, BPI, & S have been searched for Utah specimens).
  • Search of scientific literature currently available at the libraries at Utah State University for sited Utah, Nevada, Idaho, Wyoming, or Colorado specimens.
  • Popular literature, unpublished Master’s theses, Mushroom Society of Utah collection lists, field guides.

In many cases where specimens from the Intermountain area were cited in the literature, the herbarium in which the specimens had been deposited was not included in the publication. In many other cases which part of the state the specimens had been collected was not readily evident. This has lead to the inclusion of many species that are not actually found in the Intermountain Region, but are found in areas that border the region. While this presents a partial handicap, further knowledge about the habitats of the added species should be able to easily eliminate these species from the checklist. It was deemed better to include them and identify them at this point.

I am hopeful that interested individuals that collect fungi in Utah will help further refine this list by sending specimens to be deposited at the Intermountain Herbarium, or send label information and which herbarium holds the specimen so we may update both our locality records and the checklist.

Please send any comments and/or information to: Michael B. Piep at the Intermountain Herbarium. Reprints of articles dealing with Utah specimens would be greatly appreciated.

The fungal checklist is available as a series of PDF documents.
