• Biological control of an introduced weed (dyer's woad) using the pathogenic rust fungus Puccinia thlaspeos. This project includes research on application technology as well as more fundamental work aimed at understanding the biological nature of this plant-fungal relationship.

• Systematics and ecology of ectomycorrhizal fungi in the southwestern US with emphasis on the genus Inocybe. Recent work has focused on the fungi that form symbioses with plants such as Quercus gambelii and Cercocarpus ledifolius that are an important component of scrub woodlands in semiarid ecotones.
