This fungus lives on dead organic matter. It produces sacs (like earthstars) that contain spore powder rather than having spore producing gills. The sac resists drying out in the dry desert air. The spores are released from a small pore on top of the sac. The stem anchors the sac to the ground. How does it differ from the other stalked puffball?
